There are two ways to spend a vacation. One is staying at a tourist hotspot packed with tourists, spending time at the major spots and enjoying varieties of activities and the other is choosing a spot far away from city life and enjoying the seclusion. Sikkim, the beauty queen on the North-Eastern part of India’s map, offers you scope for both. If a peaceful vacation is what you are awaiting long, then Kaluk is right destination for you.
Situated at the foot of the Himalayas at a height of over 5000 feet in West Sikkim, Kaluk is a small, simple village where tranquility makes its presence felt. Kanchenjunga seems to be closest from this picturesque hamlet since it offers an uninterrupted and clear view of the ice-capped peaks. If you enjoy exploring the lifestyle and culture of different community, Kaluk will simply make you fall in love with ‘her’. You can follow the trails on the slopes to reach the local Lepcha villages and spend time with the people, who, with their simplicity and sweet smile, will win you heart. Lush greeneries prevailing largely across the village and pine forests on the slopes might also allure you to go for a jungle trek. No matter whether you stand at one place or keep moving, Kanchenjunga, with its companions, will keep a watch on you all the time. If your eyes and soul are tired of the ‘urban’ dominance, Kaluk will provide you with a perfect break.
The scenic beauty of Kaluk is indescribable in words and so is the ambience of the place. The only noise that you ears may manage to catch will be that of ‘sweet chaos’ of local kids coming from the Sardar Rang Bahadur Gurung School. The beautiful village Kaluk is located close to Gyalshing, the West Sikkim capital. On one side of Kaluk is the small hamlet of Barmiok and Rinchenpong on the other. Kaluk is considered among the windiest places in entire Sikkim which means you can reenergize your lungs which is tired of fighting with pollution, by breathing in some fresh air. If bird watching is your fascination, your camera and binocular will keep you busy throughout the day. There’s nothing much in the surroundings of Kaluk to see, yet you can go for trips to the Rinchenpong Gumba, Megi Dara and Durga Mandir.
